This is a great letter written by John Piper. Everyone should read this…
What would it be like if we all ceased trying to simply learn more about God until we actually applied to our lives, that which has already been revealed to us. I would never suggest that we ever halt our pursuit of God. Nevertheless there are areas or our lives where we neglect to include God. My observations have been that Christians often are very good at giving part of their lives over to the Lord. I used to say “Many have made Jesus their savior, but few make him their Lord.”
Normally the aspects that change are the parts everyone can see, or it involves the sins considered more grievous to the church. We may stop using course language, drinking, sleeping around or any number of primary issues in the Church. As Jesus said “But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness.” We continue to gossip, in the guise of concern or ignore the silent cry of persecuted. There is a very scary scripture in Matthew 25 where Jesus speaks what can only be deemed a prophetic glimpse of judgment day. He divides the people into sheep and goats; and what does be base this division on?
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
He divided them not based denominational preference or even their orthodox beliefs, but on their actions, how they treated their fellow man. And this is not a division to a lesser part of heaven, he says to the goats:
‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
What would it mean to apply the word to every aspect of our lives? What would it look like to the world if we lived the life we espouse every day in every aspect of our lives? I do not think I can describe it in detail, for I do not know exactly what it would look line, but I can tell you it would be phenomenal.
