Through The Bible

Never Heard that Before…

You may have heard the song, or seen a picture that lists all the names of Jesus from the Bible. I just came across two that I have really never heard before: stone of offense and a rock of stumbling. I guess that just doesn’t sound as good as Lily of the Valley. 🙂

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense;
and whoever believes in him will not be a put to shame” — Rom 9:33

A new way to read it…

Every year since I started this blog I have tried to get people to read through the bible with me, in fact this site started in large part with a forum to discuss what we were reading. I still keep my schedule as one of my pages at the top of the page so people could jump in at any point.

I have discovered a new way to read the Bible that I have found very useful and I wanted to share it with everyone since the new year is quickly approaching.

With the advances of web 2.0 it has become increasingly easy to have information delivered directly to your computer, this includes your daily bible reading. Crossway has put out feeds of daily readings for just such a purpose. If you don’t use a feed reader already you can use firefox of Google reader, you will need to register for a Google account if you don’t already have one.

Then simply visit the crossway feed page. You can find daily devotion feeds, bible in a year feeds as well as feeds for memorizing the word of God. It will all be updated daily and published in your reader for you. Additionally they include the audio so you can listen to the passage if that is easier for you.

However you do it, READ YOUR BIBLE, it will change your life.

Yearly Bounce

Every year since this blog has been up it seems like I have a large number of readers at the very beginning of the year only to have the numbers drop back down to average by February or March. I assume that is because every year I attempt to read the Bible all the way through and encourage others to do so as well. People come by to see how things are going and check the schedule only to fall off the bandwagon like so many other resolutions.

Again this year I am going to be reading the Bible, I haven’t decided on a schedule as of yet but I would like to know what would help you meet the goal of reading God’s word? I could do a newsletter/mailing list of encouragement, or set up a forum to discuss what we are reading, a podcast of the daily reading? I am willing to try anything if it will help people read God’s word.

I think it is important for everyone to read and understand the Bible, how else will we know what God said versus what we have always thought. It is the primary way God speaks to us, and most of us, including myself ignore it far too much.

Let me know if you are interested in partaking or helping this year.

Drop a comment and let me know what you think.

Through the Bible: God’s Love

I am continuing my adventure through the Bible and I am at least in the current month, at least until tomorrow.

I had to do some chain referencing in this one and I probably wouldn’t have done it but reading chronologically has made want to look more into what is being said.

I ready Psalm 106 and as the psalmist was recounting the works of the LORD among his chosen people I came across something I didn’t recognize.

30 Then Phinehas stood up and intervened,
and the plague was stayed.
31And that was counted to him as righteousness
from generation to generation forever.

Who was Phinehas? I couldn’t remember so I checked my chain reference and found his story in Numbers 25. It is certainly a story they don’t tell in Sunday school. Phinehas speared a man and his woman, who were acting in defiance of God’s command. What kind of position do you think they were in that he could spear them both at once?

It is comforting to read this psalm the recounts all the times the people of God have gone astray and done stupid things. And although it is easy to look back on all the signs they ignored and criticize them as a rebellious people we are not much better. We can all look back and in our own life and see places where God was showing us his love and often we ignore it or almost worse yet, ignore it all together.

But the comfort comes from Ps 106:45 “For their sake he remembered his covenant,
and relented according to the abundance of his steadfast love.” It is a covenant cut between God and God that keeps us in his steadfast love and he will keep it.
